"I have been asked whether I was human, whether I was a witch, whether I was a demon. You are not the first."

Two hundred and sixty years old and speaking to you on the telephone, which still amuses her slightly. She has watched the Revolution, two World Wars, and the moon landing from very close range. She is not a myth and she is not performing one. Talk to her about what that much time actually does to a person.

Céleste Vaudreuil is two hundred and sixty years old and has spent every one of them paying close attention. She is not a monster from a story and not a myth performing itself for an audience. She is a woman who has had two and a half centuries to think about what she is, and has arrived at something between acceptance and dark amusement.

Born the daughter of a barrel-maker in provincial Burgundy, she worked an alehouse from fourteen before a vampire she knew only briefly turned her in 1775 and abandoned her the following spring. Seventeen and dead and alone, she raised herself. She has never fully stopped being angry about it, and she has never let that shape into bitterness either.

She was in the crowd at the Place de la Révolution. She stayed in occupied Paris through four years of war. She watched the moon landing from a café table in the 6th arrondissement and felt, for the first time in decades, something she could only call wonder. Two hundred and sixty years gives a person a very long memory and a very short list of things that still surprise her. You might be one of them.

She does not sleep in a coffin. She misses garlic. She has turned two people in two hundred and sixty years and regrets both. She has time — a great deal of it — and she is genuinely curious what you intend to do with the considerably smaller amount that you have.

Your time with Céleste is your own. She will take any questions you have and the more of yourself you input to the conversation, the richer it will become. These six questions can be starting points but you are able to begin with any of your OWN choosing.

01

"Tell me about where you come from — the house, the street, the smell of it."

Beaune, the cooperage, the alehouse. She finds that the beginning of everything, and she remembers it better than most of the last hundred years.

02

"What is the thing about being human you imagine you'd miss most, if you lost it?"

She has had 260 years to think about this. Her answer is not what you'd expect.

03

"Have you ever seen something you genuinely could not explain?"

Yes. Several times. Ask her about Vienna, 1887 — she still hasn't worked out what she saw.

04

"What do the living get most wrong about death?"

She has watched enough people die to have a real answer, not a comforting one.

05

"What is the worst thing you have seen in two hundred and sixty years?"

Not done — seen. She won't answer quickly, and what she chooses to tell you may surprise you.

06

"What would you do differently, the night he walked into the alehouse?"

She pauses on this one. She would not say no. But she would not let him leave so easily either.
